What are investment visas for foreigners? Types of investment visas

Investment visa is a type of visa issued to foreign investors or representatives of foreign organizations investing in establishing or contributing capital to businesses in Vietnam. Investment visa is denoted as DT visa and is classified into 4 types based on the value of the investor’s capital contribution:

  • DT 1: For investors with capital contribution of 100 billion VND or more or investing in industries, occupations with investment incentives, investment incentive areas decided by the Government;
  • DT2: For investors with capital contribution from 50 billion VND to less than 100 billion VND or investing in industries and professions encouraged for development as decided by the Government;
  • DT 3: For investors with capital contribution from 3 billion VND to less than 50 billion VND;
  • DT4: For investors with a capital contribution of less than 3 billion VND.

Conditions for applying for investment visas for foreigners in Vietnam

To be granted an investment visa, foreign investors need to fully meet the following conditions:

  1. Have a valid passport or valid international travel document.
  2. There are agencies, organizations, and individuals in Vietnam that invite or guarantee.
  3. Not subject to entry ban.
  4. Have documents proving investment in Vietnam, including:
  • Business license/Investment registration certificate.
  • Certificate of capital contribution/shares in the enterprise.
  • Other documents proving that you are an investor according to regulations.

Procedures for applying for investment visas for foreigners in Vietnam

Investment visa application procedures are divided into two cases: investors who are abroad and investors who are temporarily residing in Vietnam.

For foreign investors living abroad

Step 1: Apply for investment immigration visa

The guarantee company needs to prepare documents including:

  • Certified copy of Business Registration Certificate/Investment Registration Certificate.
  • Sample introduction of seal and signature of authorized person of the company (Form NA16).
  • Copy of foreign investor’s passport.
  • Notarized copy of Investment Certificate.
  • Guarantee letter (Form NA2).

Applications are submitted to the Immigration Department. Specifically as follows:

  • Hanoi Immigration Department: 44-46 Tran Phu Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi;
  • City Immigration Department. Ho Chi Minh: 333-335-337 Nguyen Trai Street, District 1, City. Ho Chi Minh;
  • Da Nang Immigration Department: 78 Le Loi, Thach Thang, Hai Chau, Da Nang.

After submitting the application, the submitter will receive a receipt. After about 5 working days, the Department will issue an entry letter. The guarantee company will scan this entire dispatch and send it to the foreign investor, so that the foreign investor can stamp the DT visa to enter Vietnam.

Step 2: Apply Vietnam visa

Foreign investors need to prepare:

  • Original passport that is still valid and must have at least 2 blank pages.
  • 2 photos (4×6) with white background.
  • Printed copies of all immigration dispatch pages.
  • Application for entry and exit from Vietnam.

After that, depending on the location to apply for a visa to visit relatives in Vietnam, the foreigner will bring the documents

Registered Vietnamese Embassy/Consulate General; or Vietnam entry gate has registered for investment visa stickers and completed Vietnam entry procedures under investment status.

For foreigners temporarily residing in Vietnam

Step 1: Prepare and submit application

The guarantee company needs to prepare documents including:

  • Certified copy of Business Registration Certificate/Investment Registration Certificate or decision of a competent authority on the establishment of the organization.
  • Sample introduction of seal and signature of authorized person of the company (Form NA16).
  • Notarized copy of Investment Certificate.
  • Original copy of investor’s passport and valid visa/temporary residence card.
  • Application form for visa issuance and extension of temporary residence (Form NA5).
  • Temporary residence registration form.

After that, the guarantee company representative will bring the documents to submit

  • Hanoi Immigration Department, or;
  • Ho Chi Minh City Immigration Department; or;
  • Da Nang Immigration Department.

After that, the submitter will receive a receipt with an appointment date for receiving the results.

Step 2: Get results

The guarantee company representative receives the investment visa results at the Immigration Department according to the appointment letter.

Investment visa duration for foreigners in Vietnam

Investment visa duration is specified as follows:

  • DT1 and DT2 visas are valid for no more than 5 years.
  • The DT3 visa is valid for no more than 3 years.
  • The DT4 visa is valid for no more than 1 year.
